The Hollow Core argues that modern polarization is not mainly a failure of attitude but a failure of social structure. Over the last two centuries, the dense middle layer of shared life—families, congregations, guilds, neighborhoods, local authorities—has thinned and become optional. As those mediating spaces disappear, politics is forced to carry belonging, morality, and meaning, turning ordinary disagreement into existential conflict. Digital technology then accelerates this process by rewarding exposure, speed, and escalation. The final question is whether small, local forms of containment can still interrupt totalization enough to keep shared life livable.
